KUCHING, June 15: The National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) Sarawak urged the public to always check the registration and approval status of any beauty clinic before seeking treatment, as there are still many unlicensed beauty establishments operating in the State.

MTPN Sarawak chairman Wynson Ong warned that unregistered beauty clinics, including mobile services offering invasive procedures such as injections, pose serious risks to consumer health and safety, particularly when conducted by unqualified or unlicensed individuals.

“Always check the registration and approval status of any beauty clinic before seeking services. Make sure the clinic is legally registered with the Ministry of Health and is run by a recognised professional,” Ong said.

He issued this reminder following reports of a beauty clinic in Kuching being fined RM150,000 on June 12, 2025, for operating without a license and violating health regulations. The doctor involved had previously committed similar offences in 2017, highlighting a concerning pattern of non-compliance in the beauty industry.

Following two years of monitoring the situation in Sarawak alongside the Ministry of Health, Ong revealed that there are still many beauty clinics operating without a valid license in the State.

“This is a very worrying issue given that the treatments offered involve aspects of consumer health and safety,” he said.

He also disclosed that MTPN Sarawak has received several complaints from consumers regarding such illegal services. However, many victims are reluctant to come forward due to embarrassment or find it inappropriate to highlight.

He stressed that every consumer complaint is important and should be voiced for the sake of safety and common interest.

Ong further highlighted the existence of mobile beauty operators offering high-risk procedures, such as injections, in unsuitable locations like hotel rooms and private residences. These services are often promoted on social media.

“This is very worrying because procedures involving injections require a sterile, safe environment and should be conducted by certified medical officers,” he stressed.

MTPN Sarawak reiterated its commitment to working closely with authorities to uphold consumer rights and ensure that the beauty industry operates in a safe, ethical, and regulated manner.
