BAU, May 24: Some 100 less fortunate people from Singai area today received food baskets from the National Consumer Action Council (MPTN) Sarawak branch.

The programme under the national food basket programme was a joint effort with the Sarawak Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).

According to Sarawak KPDN director Matthew Barin, the recipients were from 15 villages in Singai area and were represented by their respective village chiefs at the handover. The programme was held in conjunction with the Hari Gawai Dayak celebration on June 1.

“By having such programmes, we want to encourage more non-governmental organisations, corporate bodies and individuals to share with the less fortunate groups in our society,” he told reporters today after officiating at the programme at Dewan Sri Singai, Kampung Sudoh, here.

He said similar programmes have been held in Sungai Asap, Miri, Petra Jaya, Kuching and Samarahan, among others.

“For this year, we have held more than 10 such programmes and it is ongoing.

“And for this programme, it will also include those families who are affected by disaster,” he added.

Meanwhile, he pointed out that the ministry will launch the Maximum Price Scheme this May 29 in conjunction with the coming Hari Gawai Dayak celebration.

However, he did not reveal the type of food items as yet.
