KUCHING, June 30: Two men were each fined RM2,000 or face three months in jail after admitting to assaulting a photographer during a memorial gathering.
The confrontation occurred on June 22 at a house in Kampung Tabuan, during a prayer gathering held in memory of the victim’s late ex-wife. The victim, 30, had attended the event with the intention of taking his son—whom he shared with the deceased—out for a meal.
Tensions quickly escalated when the victim’s former father-in-law, 63-year-old Mahran Morshidi, objected and told him he had no right to take the child.
The disagreement turned physical when Mahran’s nephew, 32-year-old Abdul Qayyum Marzuq Sahdan, joined in and began attacking the victim. Mahran also participated in the assault.
The victim suffered multiple injuries, including swelling around the eye, bruising on the forehead, and pain at the back of his head. He was later treated at a hospital and filed a police report.
In court today, both accused pleaded guilty to a charge of causing hurt under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read with Section 34 for acting together. The case was heard before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.
Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin led the prosecution. Legal counsel represented neither of the accused. — DayakDaily
