MIRI, April 27: Police have launched a manhunt for a 31-year-old Indonesian man who escaped while he was being transported from a court in Bintulu to Lambir Prison in Miri yesterday afternoon.

The fugitive has been identified as Atmal and his passport number is B1616119 (expiring on July 24, 2020).

The incident happened near Sepupok Niah at about 1.55pm after the prison vehicle stopped by the roadside when the suspect pretended that he had a stomach ache and said he needed to defecate.

Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah, in confirming the incident, said when the vehicle’s door was opened for him to defecate, “the suspect fled”.

Lim said the foreigner was still under remand as his court hearing was still on.

“He was arrested under the National Parks and Natural Reserves Ordinance 1998,” he said.

Those who have details of the fugitive are urged to call Miri police at 085-433400. — DayakDaily
