Mancha Ata: Sarawak’s first Iban Police Commissioner with ‘Bujang Berani’ spirit

KUCHING, Nov 10: Dato Mancha Ata has made history as the first Iban Sarawak Commissioner of Police, carrying with him the esteemed title of “Bujang Berani.”

Hailing from Asajaya Samarahan, the 58-year-old Mancha received the Jasa Perkasa Persekutuan (JPP) on Dec 2, 2014, for his exceptional courage and bravery during the Lahad Datu Sabah invasion (Op Daulat) in 2013 when he was still a superintendent.

In recognition of his bravery, he was bestowed with the Panglima Setia Bintang Sarawak, earning him the title of ‘Dato’ during the 85th birthday celebration of Sarawak Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Taib Mahmud.


Mancha served as an intelligence officer with the VAT 69 commando special operations team in the Department of Internal Security and Public Order in Ulu Kinta Perak when he held the rank of superintendent.

Later, as the Acting Commissioner of Police (ACP), he became the deputy brigade commander of the Police General Armed Forces (PGA) in Kinarut Sabah in 2019 and eventually assumed the role of commander in 2020 with the rank of Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC).

Promoted to deputy commissioner of police on Jun 11, 2021, and later appointed as Sarawak Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mancha pursued knowledge enhancement in the enforcement field by attending several courses in the United States in the late ’90s.

As Sarawak Commissioner of Police, his main focuses include strengthening integrity at every level by eradicating corruption and abuse of power, enhancing the quality of effective service delivery, and fostering cooperation with the Sarawak government to safeguard peace and harmony in the state.

The handover ceremony was attended by Bukit Aman, Commercial Crime and Investigation Department Director Police Commissioner Dato Sri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf, and the new Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Director Datuk Mohd Azman Sapri Abang Ahmad. — DayakDaily
