Man with criminal record arrested after viral altercation in Kuching

KUCHING, June 16: A 44-year-old local man has been arrested following his involvement in an altercation that went viral on social media.

According to a media release, Sarawak Police Commissioner Alexson Naga Chabu said that in the 33-second video, the suspect was seen pushing and scolding the victim, who is also a local man aged 57, by the roadside along Jalan Patingan here.

“Preliminary interrogation of the suspect revealed an admission of involvement in this case. Further checks found that the suspect has a prior criminal record. The suspect’s urine tested negative for drugs.

“The case is being investigated under Sections 323/506 of the Penal Code for the offences of causing hurt and criminal intimidation. Section 323 provides for a punishment of up to one year in prison or a fine of up to RM2,000. Meanwhile, Section 506 carries a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or both, upon conviction,” he said.
