Man owing RM1.2 mil fined RM1,600 for assaulting debt collector

KUCHING, Oct 3: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a self-employed man RM1,600 or in default of two months’ imprisonment for voluntarily causing hurt to a debt collector.

Lim Chea Yi, 34, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali to the charge framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

Section 323 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of a year, or maximum fine of RM2,000 or both, upon conviction.


Lim was found voluntarily causing hurt to the 51-year-old man debt collector near a golf club at Jalan Stadium, at about 3.15pm on September 25, 2022.

Based on the brief facts of the case, on the day of the incident, the victim acted on behalf of a loan agency to collect a debt of RM1,221,476.09 from the accused.

When the victim and his friend arrived at the scene, a group of about 10 unknown men surrounded him. The victim was then shoved by the accused and another man.

The victim was later berated by the group of men, leading him to sustain bruises on his neck and elbow.

Prosecuting Officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented by counsel. — DayakDaily
