Man gets six years’ jail, 10 strokes for drug possession

KUCHING, Dec 15: A 28-year-old man was sentenced by the Sessions Court here today to six years’ jail and 10 strokes of the cane for possessing 38.06 grammes of syabu. 

Christopher Rody Sunyi pleaded guilty to the charge before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman. 

The accused was found to have in possession 38.06 grammes of syabu, at a hut of a farm in Kampung Bogag at about 7am on June 22. 

The offence was framed under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same Act, which provides life imprisonment or a jail term of not less than five years, and whipping of not less than 10 strokes, upon conviction. 

In mitigation, Christopher asked for leniency because of his health conditions as he is HIV positive and has tuberculosis.

However, Judge Afidah convicted him as charged and sentenced him to six years’ imprisonment plus 10 strokes of the cane. 

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff while the accused was not represented by a counsel. — DayakDaily
