Man gets 13 years jail, 20 strokes of rotan for drug possession

Man pleads not guilty to intimidation, causing hurt to wife.

KUCHING, Nov 30: The High Court here today sentenced a man to a total of 13 years behind bars and ordered him to be whipped 20 times for possessing cannabis.

High Court Judge Azhahari Kamal Ramli imposed the sentence on Muhammad Yazid Johnny, 29, after he pleaded guilty to all three alternative charges framed against him.


Azhahari sentenced Muhammad Yazid to six years jail and 10 strokes of the rotan each for two of the three alternative charges. For the other charge, he imposed a one-year jail term.

The judge ordered all sentences to be served concurrently and to take effect from the date of arrest.

Muhammad Yazid was charged under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same Act for possessing 427 grams of cannabis inside an upstairs room of a house in Kampung Semariang Baru on Sept 29, 2016, at about 2pm.

In another alternative charge, he was charged under Subsection 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under the same section for possessing 10.53 grams of cannabis on Sept 29, 2016, at about 12.20pm at the parking lot in front of the PosLaju Office in Jalan Song.

He was also charged under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same Act and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code with Raden Siti Norqamella Putri for possessing 925 grams of cannabis on Sept 26, 2016, at about 12.20pm at the parking lot in front of the PosLaju Office in Jalan Song.

Muhammad Yazid was represented by counsel Abdul Rahman, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Musli Ab Hamid prosecuted. — DayakDaily
