KUCHING, June 15: The Sessions Court here has sentenced a jobless man to an imprisonment of 12 years for causing death to his grandaunt in September 2020.

Azizan Zainal, 28, pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, which carries maximum imprisonment term of 30 years and liable to a fine, upon conviction.

Sessions Court Judge Afidah Abdul Rahmad sentenced him to an imprisonment of 12 years, with effect from the date of arrest, which was September 21, 2020.

He was charged for causing the death of his grandaunt Dara Mohamad, at her house in Kampung Rampangi, Semariang, between 8.15 pm on September 20, 2020 and 6.30am on September 21, 2020.

Dara, 66, was found unconscious on a chair by her sister and was pronounced dead by Sarawak General Hospital paramedics on September 21, 2020.

The cause was believed to be a misunderstanding between the deceased and the accused over money matters.

On February 23, 2021, the Sessions Court ordered the accused to be sent to Hospital Sentosa Kuching for observation for a month.

His psychiatric report said he is healthy and fit for trial.
