KUCHING, Sept 25: A local man was sentenced to a fine of RM3,000 or three months’ in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here today for stealing a mountain bike belonging to a 62-year-old man in early August.
Mohd Zikri Jerry, 31, pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi.
He was charged with committing the offense at Jalan Wan Alwi around 1am on August 4 under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of up to seven years in prison or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Based on the facts of the case, the complainant who was the grandson of the victim, while passing through Bukit Bayor, spotted a man riding his grandfather’s bicycle in a suspicious manner.
The complainant questioned the accused about the bicycle, but the accused attempted to flee before the latter was apprehended by the complainant.
Subsequently, the complainant handed over the accused to the police for further action and investigation.
The estimated loss suffered by the victim was approximately RM500.
Upon investigation, it was found that the accused had the victim’s mountain bike in his possession and he was apprehended along with the stolen property.
It was realised the bicycle was missing just a few hours before the accused was arrested.
The prosecution in the case was conducted by ASP Rogayah Rosli, while the accused was not represented by legal counsel. — DayakDaily
