Malaysia registers 563 new Covid-19 cases and two deaths

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12: Malaysia reported 563 new positive cases of Covid-19 and two deaths today.

The information was disclosed by Health director general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah during a press conference, adding that the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia has increased to 16,220 cases.

He also said there were six new clusters of Covid-19 identified.

“Out of the new cases reported, there was one import case from a Malaysian citizen who returned from Indonesia and reported in Kuala Lumpur.

“From the 562 cases of local transmission, 498 cases involved Malaysian citizens and 64 cases are from foreigners.

“There are six new clusters reported with two of them in Kuala Lumpur, one in Selangor, one in Sabah, one in Johor and one in Putrajaya,” he said today.

Dr Noor Hisham added Sabah still topped the number of positive cases reported with 291 cases followed by Penang with 141 cases, Selangor (69 cases), Kuala Lumpur (28 cases), Negri Sembilan (12 cases), Kedah (10 cases), Perak (4 cases), Johor (2 cases), Labuan (2 cases), Putrajaya (2 cases), Melaka (1 case) and Sarawak (1 case).

He added Penang recorded an increase in the number of cases as compared to yesterday.

Nonetheless, Dr Noor Hisham explained that the situation in Penang is under control as all of the cases were reported from the Remand Prison cluster.

As for the two new deaths reported, Dr Noor Hisham said it involved an 85-year-old woman who had hypertension, cardiovascular disease and chronic lung disease who passed away at Tawau Hospital and a 48-year-old woman who passed away at Tuaran Hospital, both in Sabah.

“With two new deaths, he noted the death toll due to Covid-19 in Malaysia has reached 159 people or one per cent of total confirmed cases.

He said there were 109 new cases of recoveries bringing the cumulative number of recoveries for Covid-19 in Malaysia to 11,022 cases or 67.9 per cent of the overall Covid-19 cases in the country.

Dr Noor Hisham disclosed that there were 5,039 active cases with 98 patients being treated at the Intensive Care Units (ICU) in hospitals with 29 of them on ventilators.—DayakDaily
