KUCHING, Dec 19: A catwalk featuring special needs children modeling white fairy costumes designed by the award-winning Nasha Prive took centre stage at the Malaysia Kids Ambassador 2023 pageant in a touching tribute to the memory of six-year-old Zayn Rayyan, an autistic boy who tragically lost his life in Kuala Lumpur.

Zayn’s body was found at about 10pm on Dec 6, about 34 hours after he was reported missing by the family. His death was first suspected to be caused by drowning but was later reclassified as a homicide after an autopsy found strangulation marks and defensive injuries to the child’s neck and body.

The pageant, officiated by Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Women chief Kho Teck Wan on behalf of Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, was organised by the Kuching Association of Talent Development and Welfare of Special Needs (KATSN) at a hotel last night (Dec 18).

According to a media release, this competition was the first of its kind in Kuching, aiming to empower the younger generation to become future tourism ambassadors while celebrating the rich culture and diversity of Sarawak and other states in Malaysia.

Originating from Taiwan, the initiative sought to provide a platform for special needs children to enhance their confidence, public speaking skills, and stage presence while simultaneously promoting tourism in Malaysia.

The competition showcased the talents and potential of young Sarawakians and Malaysians in arts, culture, music, crafts, and tourism. It also emphasised the importance of preserving one’s culture among children.

The competition comprised three categories, with Nur Almie Arissa, Putri Ika Arisya, and Gerilyn Goh emerging as the winners in Classes A, B, and C, respectively.

Serren Ang, Ammrara Arisya, Athen Wilson, Aulia Issatunisa, Ashley Chai, and Sarafina Arisya secured second and third places in their respective categories.

Beyond the runway, contestants not only modeled Nasha Prive’s designs but also showcased traditional clothing.

Commencing on Dec 16 and 17 at the Royal Cruise and the Borneo Cultural Museum respectively, the competition provided participants from various districts with an opportunity to promote Sarawak’s cultural diversity through categories such as creative ethnic clothing.
