KUCHING, Jan 19: Malaysia remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing the renewable energy sector, with Sarawak at the forefront of efforts to establish itself as a renewable energy hub.

According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof highlighted that Sarawak leads the nation in renewable energy initiatives, with 62 per cent of its energy derived from renewables compared to only 24 per cent in Peninsular Malaysia.

He explained that this strategic advantage positions Sarawak to export energy to Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore.

“One of the agreed strategies to support Sarawak is to establish it as a hydrogen hub for the region, not just for Malaysia but for Asia as well.

“The second focus is on enhancing connectivity, enabling Sarawak to supply energy to the Peninsula and neighboring countries.

“This includes an undersea cable connection that has been agreed upon to deliver energy to Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore,” Fadillah said after presenting Chinese New Year (CNY) 2025 contributions to senior citizens and persons with disabilities (OKU) in Sungai Tengah, Matang. The event was held at the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Matang Hall today.

Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, further revealed that discussions are underway with neighboring countries to establish the “Borneo Power Grid.”

He explained that the grid will connect Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei Darussalam, and Kalimantan, Indonesia.

“In addition to the ASEAN Power Grid, we aim to develop the Borneo Power Grid, which will link Sarawak, Brunei, Sabah, and the entirety of Kalimantan. This is a key agenda to be discussed among energy ministers in the involved Southeast Asian governments,” he said.

Also present at the event was Tupong assemblyman Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman. – DayakDaily
