KUCHING, Aug 18: Sarawak has a population of 2,453,000 people, with an annual growth rate of 0.2 per cent from 2011 to 2020, based on key findings of Malaysia Census 2020.
According to a media statement, Kuching District has the highest population at 609,000 people, and Sarawak also recorded more males than females, with a gender ratio of 107 males for every 100 females.
In addition, Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) subnational statistics show that by State constituency, N75 Senadin has the highest population at 132,000 people, followed by N6 Tupong in second with a total of 91,000 residents.
“The publication of DUN subnational statistics is an important reference for stakeholders and policymakers as input to decision implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of national development programmes, and research at the State level, administrative district, parliament, and DUN.
“The statistics provided can also assist and provide preliminary information to assemblymen in order for them to plan appropriate strategies to ensure and provide the best services in their respective areas,” DUN Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar said today during the ‘Parliament And DUN Tour Series on Key Findings Of Malaysia Census 2020 And Sarawak Gross Domestic Product (GDP) 2021’ briefing at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here.
He noted that per composition of the elderly population (65 years and over), Lubuk Antu District accounted for 13.5 per cent of Sarawak’s total.
Meanwhile, Chief Statistician of Malaysia-cum-Census commissioner of the Malaysia 2020 Census Dato Sri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin revealed Sarawak’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) recorded a value of RM131.2 billion, a 2.9 per cent increase compared to the negative 6.8 per cent recorded in 2020.
The service sector contributed 35.9 per cent of the growth, with a 2.1 per cent increase.
The manufacturing sector contributed 28.4 per cent of GDP, with a growth rate of 11.2 per cent, while the mining and quarrying sector contributes 21.1 per cent.
Sarawak’s per capita GDP increased to RM65,971 in 2021 from RM55,931 in 2020.
Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM)’s initiative in statistical product development is expected to be utilised by all parties to improve efficiency in resource planning and management at the state and district levels.
Improving the efficiency of resource planning and management through statistics up to the level of administrative districts, parliaments, and DUNs can more effectively and beneficially strengthen the national economy, social development, and people’s well-being. — DayakDaily
