KUCHING, July 1: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will investigate Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Dato Seri Tiong King Sing’s allegation that there is corruption among immigration officers at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed this in a statement today, according to the news portal Malaysia Gazette.
“Regarding the allegations of corruption made by the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, MACC will investigate the matter,” Azam said.
He also mentioned that the Commission would take statements from all parties, including Tiong, to ensure an appropriate and smooth investigation process.
At the same time, non-governmental organisation (NGO) Malaysian Corruption Watch (MWC) president Jais Abdul Karim in a statement posted on its Facebook page today, urged Tiong to prove his claim regarding the existence of corruption and chronic abuse of power by a few immigration officers at the country’s entry points.
He said Tiong’s action to raid KLIA ‘lacks professionalism’ and the minister should have reported the issue to the Home Affairs Ministry for further action. — DayakDaily
