MACC remands individual over RM455,000 compensation funds misuse

BINTULU, Jan 22: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sarawak has remanded an individual suspected of misappropriating compensation funds totaling approximately RM455,000.

According to MACC Sarawak, a five-day remand order, effective until January 26, 2025, was issued by Magistrate Galvin Loo Wei Ling following an application made by MACC at the Bintulu Magistrate’s Court earlier today.

Sources revealed that the male suspect, in his 50s, was arrested around 7pm yesterday while providing a statement at the MACC Bintulu Branch.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect, a community leader, is believed to have committed the offense between 2019 and 2023.

“He is suspected of misappropriating compensation funds provided by a logging company, which were intended for distribution to the residents of a longhouse in relation to a logging project on their land,” the source added.

Meanwhile, MACC Sarawak Director Hasbilah Mohamad Salleh confirmed the detention and stated that the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.

He also mentioned that MACC had seized approximately RM9,500 in cash and a mobile phone. – DayakDaily
