MIRI, March 4: A woman in her 60’s here was duped out of RM31,400 by her so called “lover” whom she had become acquainted with via Facebook.

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu disclosed today that they recelived a report on the incident yesterday.

It was reported that the victim had never met the suspect, and they only communicated via WhatApps and Line apps.

“They had formed a love affair,” said Alexson.

According to Alexson, the victim said the suspect told her he was coming to see her in Miri and bringing some cash and luxury gifts for her.

“The suspect claimed that he was detained by Customs as they spotted foreign currency and to ensure the release, the suspect told the victim that some payment needed to be made,” he said.

The victim made the payment as instructed by her ‘lover’.

However, she realised she had been duped when the suspect could no longer be contacted, leading her to file a police report.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. — DayakDaily
