KUCHING, Jan 3: Two hikers, a 37-year-old Canadian man and a 28-year-old Malaysian man, who got lost in the jungle on Mount Matang were successfully located and rescued at about 3pm today.
Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak reported that the hikers were found safe approximately 450 metres from the Bomba control post by the team of firefighters from its Petra Jaya Station.
The search and rescue (SAR) operation commenced at 10am, employing a ‘sweeper’ technique with two teams searching the area where the hikers were last reported missing.
Both the hikers were guided out of the forest and subsequently transported to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) by the police for a health assessment.
The two hikers had spent the night in the jungle after losing their way during a hike and a night search operation by the enforcement authorities failed to locate them yesterday (Jan 2).
Police, along with four villagers including a tour guide for Matang recreational areas, also joined and assisted in the search operation which concluded at about 4.50pm today. — DayakDaily
