KUCHING, Dec 3: Sarawak has increased the permissible lorry load limit to 53 tonnes, reflecting the improved capacity of roads on the Pan Borneo Highway.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the upgrade aligns with the highway’s enhanced standards, allowing heavier trucks to operate safely and efficiently.

“The adjustment is expected to ease logistics operations and support broader economic activity across the State,” he said during the Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

The announcement came in response to a question from Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen, who pointed out that Sarawak’s lorry load limits remained lower than those in Peninsular Malaysia despite the highway’s completion. Chong noted that industry players had urged the State government to revise the limits to reflect the improved road infrastructure.

Before this adjustment, Sarawak’s lorry weight limits were lower than those in Peninsular Malaysia, which constrained logistics efficiency and increased transportation costs. With the new 53-tonne limit, heavier cargo can be moved in fewer trips, benefiting transport operators and businesses that rely on road freight.

Uggah also stressed that while heavier lorries can now be operated, all vehicles must continue to comply with road safety regulations, and the State will monitor traffic to ensure infrastructure longevity. The change is part of ongoing efforts to modernise Sarawak’s transport network and support the growing demands of the logistics sector. DayakDaily
