Lorry carrying RM447,401 worth of smuggled beer seized, 55yo driver detained

SIBU, May 31: A 55-year-old man was detained by the authorities under suspicion of smuggling and 1,806 boxes of illicit alcoholic drinks worth RM447,401 were seized from him yesterday.

A 10-ton lorry was also seized from the suspect.

Commander of 10th Batalion General Operation Force, SAC Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang said acting on information received, a team of enforcement officers from the force stopped a lorry at the roadside near Lanang Bridge suspected to be carrying smuggled alcoholic drinks.

“Upon inspection on the lorry, the team found that it was carrying 1,806 boxes of beer,” he said.

He added that the suspect failed to show proof that the tax on the items had been paid for, an offence under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967.

“We have referred the case to Sibu police for further action,” he said. — DayakDaily
