MIRI, Dec 17: Longhouse dwellers in rural areas have been reminded to stop taking things for granted when it comes to fire prevention awareness.

“We should learn from the past mistakes and incidents involving fire in the rural areas,” emphasised Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau today.

He made these remarks at a ceremony to hand over fire extinguishers to five longhouses within the Telang Usan constituency today. Dennis also urged the recipients to purchase insurance coverage to insure their property from fire.

“With such coverage, longhouses will have some compensation for the damage caused by the fire or other disasters such as floods, which you can use to rebuild your longhouse,” he explained.

With yearly premium of RM75 for insurance coverage worth RM10,000, Dennis opined the amount is reasonable, with most longhouse residents qualified to take it up.

At the event, Dennis presented a total of 40 fire extinguishers which will benefit 370 doors in Long Julan Asal, Long Julan Pelutan, Long Anap, Long Apu and Long Palai.

Dennis also expressed hope that more fire awareness programmes will be held in rural areas.

Citing the importance of properly wiring longhouses, he suggested Sarawak Energy Berhad could perhaps could run a programme on the subject to help enlighten longhouses folks.
