KUCHING, Jan 8: The flood problem in Bintulu cannot be solved in a short period of time as it requires a lengthy process which would first start by conducting thorough studies, says Bintulu MP Dato Seri Tiong King Sing.

“For the long run, the maintenance of the drainage system must be done from time to time to prevent flash floods.

“In the meantime, having monsoon drains built will help reduce the possibility of disasters, especially flash floods due to continuous heavy downpour,” he said in a statement today.

Tiong, who is also Dudong assemblyman and the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to China further stated that apart from cooperation between various government agencies, unity among the community plays an important role to solve the community’s problem.

He also said the contractor company responsible for carrying out large-scale development would need to work closely with the relevant departments or agencies to ensure that the project does not affect the drainage system that contributes to flood disasters.

“We are all aware that this flood disaster is a natural phenomenon, but we are also able to prevent or reduce its effects if there are early actions taken such as appropriate maintenance and renovation,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
