KUCHING, July 10: A rural health clinic in Long Loyang, Sarawak, has made history as Malaysia’s first hydrogen-based hybrid energy facility, operating entirely on solar power and rainwater-generated hydrogen, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Abang Johari described the project as a bold example of how green innovation can reach remote communities, delivering real impact and sustainability.
“The Long Loyang Health Clinic now operates 24 hours a day using energy generated from rainwater and sunlight, making it the first of its kind in Malaysia,” the Premier said during his keynote address at the World Asia Hydrogen Conference 2025 held in Tokyo today.
He emphasised that this initiative is a true manifestation of green energy transformation that can permeate even into rural communities.
“This isn’t just a pilot project, but a promise fulfilled, where innovation touches lives in every corner of the state,” he stressed.
The project forms part of Sarawak’s broader push to develop its hydrogen economy and clean energy infrastructure under the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER), which was launched earlier this year.
Sarawak’s achievements, including major projects such as H2biscus and H2ornbill, the hydrogen-powered ART under Kuching Urban Transport System (KUTS), and the 72 per cent reduction in grid carbon emissions between 2010 and 2023, have further strengthened its leadership in Malaysia’s clean energy transition.
Abang Johari further extended an invitation to the international energy community to form strategic partnerships with Sarawak, asserting: “Sarawak has taken the first step. Now, we invite you all to join us on this journey towards innovation, inclusion, and shared prosperity.” — DayakDaily
