KUCHING, Jan 23: Plans are underway to upgrade the existing road to Long Lellang in Miri, marking a major step in Sarawak’s rural development, with construction targeted to begin in June 2026.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala said the project is crucial for improving accessibility, safety and the well-being of rural residents.

“Roads are the pulse of development. Improved access not only facilitates the movement of residents but also acts as a catalyst for local economic growth, broadening access to education and healthcare while enhancing community safety,” he said during a briefing session with Long Lellang residents, organised by the N78 Mulu Service Centre in collaboration with the Highland Development Agency (HDA) on Monday (Jan 19).

He said the 4.7-kilometre stretch will see 1.185 kilometres concreted at key points, while the remaining 3.69 kilometres will be upgraded with gravel to improve safety and passability.

The project will also replace 31 log culverts with safer structures and upgrade three log bridges over main rivers to durable steel composite bridges.

“Provided the procurement process proceeds smoothly, construction is expected to begin in June 2026. The State government remains committed to ensuring this project delivers maximum benefit to the people,” he said.

He also urged residents to cooperate and provide feedback to ensure the project runs smoothly.

Also present at the briefing were HDA regional director Juan Ubit, Miri Division Penan community leader Pemanca Hanneser Uning Bong, Long Seridan and Long Lellang area chief Penghulu Willie Wing, as well as local village heads Beraok Ibuh and Tene Uked. — DayakDaily
