SUBIS, June 10: Local residents proudly held ‘I Love Premier Sarawak’ banners and waved Sarawak flags as they extended a warm welcome to the Sarawak Merdeka Convoy led by Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg as they arrived at Bungai Beach at 10.41am today.
Covering a distance of 47.3 kilometres, the convoy embarked on a journey that lasted about 50 minutes after being ceremoniously flagged off from the Miri Indoor Stadium, marking an important moment in the Sarawak 60 Years Independence celebration.
Upon reaching Bungai Beach, their first pitstop, the Premier participated in the traditional custom of ‘Nyiam Batis’ (foot bathing) and partook in a yellow rice ceremony, followed by captivating performances from the PAWE Sibuti group, who warmly greeted the Premier.
Subsequently, the Premier and his entourage were briefed by Subis District Pemanca Dr Ali Mudin about the fascinating tourist spots and the progress of tourism infrastructure in the area.
Afterward, the Premier engaged in conversations and mingled with the local community, culminating in a grand banquet attended by esteemed dignitaries, including community leaders and tribal chiefs (KMKK).
Meanwhile, attendees were treated to a delightful choir performance by students from SMK Bekenu and an enthralling drumming display.
More interestingly, Abang Johari and his entourage joyfully joined the local residents in dancing to the beats of the drums, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie.
Additionally, Abang Johari announced a donation of RM10,000 to the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) of SMK Bekenu in recognising their commendable achievements in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination for 2022.
Subsequently, the convoy group departed Bungai Beach at 11.55am, en route to their next pitstop in Kampung Nyalau, Bintulu which will cover a distance of 76.1km.
Minister of Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Federal Deputy Minister of Health Lukanisman Awang Sauni, and Deputy Minister of Education and Innovation Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee were part of the convoy. — DayakDaily
