KUCHING, April 1: Councillors serving in local councils have been reminded to abide by the various policies set by the regional government.

In making the call, Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the position of councillors was approved by the Sarawak Cabinet and ought to support government policies.

“Your position (as councillors) is not just a political appointment, but approved by the Sarawak Cabinet, so you are part of regional government.

“And as such, you are answerable to the regional government and need to work as a team,” Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government said.

He said this today at the swearing in ceremony of 31 councillors serving Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).

Dr Sim pointed out that local councils in the region are not answerable to the Federal government, adding that councillors must be aware of such autonomy.

On MPP, he said the council has progressed and developed tremendously, but reminded councillors that there were still many things to do to become an efficient and sustainable. — DayakDaily
