Local businesses to benefit from steel project in Samalaju Industrial Park

BEIJING, Nov 30: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan yesterday paid a courtesy call on Metallurgical Corporation of China (MCC) president Zhang Mengxing at their headquarters here to discuss the latest development on the proposed Wenan steel project in Samalaju Industrial Park (SIP).

MCC is the shareholder and engineering procurement construction (EPC) contractor for the project.

Also present at the meeting were Wenan Steel Malaysia Sdn Bhd chairman Wang Wen An, Assistant Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Small and Medium Enterprise Datuk Naroden Majais, Assistant Minister of Industrial Development Malcolm Mussen Lamoh and Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development Datu Liaw Soon Eng.


During the meeting, Awang Tengah stressed the need for the project to be environmentally friendly and adopting the latest technology.

He also called for the company to give priority to local contractors and local suppliers for building materials and equipment.

“I also would like to give the assurance on behalf of the Sarawak government that we will facilitate the implementation of the project,” he added.

MCC responded positively to Awang Tengah’s suggestions and assured that the steel plant would be built using the latest environmentally friendly technology as well as giving priority to local contractors and suppliers.

MCC is one of the largest steel mill EPC contractors in the world.
