KUCHING, Aug 3: Sarawak is considering establishing an international school in Bintulu to support the town’s growing industrial sector and increasing number of foreign investors, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg says.
He said the proposal is among the key priorities being considered as Bintulu continues to expand as one of Sarawak’s leading industrial hubs, alongside plans to develop a new township in Samalaju to accommodate its growing workforce and industries.
Speaking at the opening of Anjung Kasih at Hospital Bintulu, Abang Johari said the State government must ensure supporting infrastructure keeps pace with the area’s rapid economic development.
“Bintulu is growing rapidly. There are two things that the government needs to consider. First, an international school because many investors have established companies here.
“Second is a new township in Samalaju, which will provide residential areas and serve as a new urban centre for the major companies operating there,” he said.
He said an international school would help meet the needs of expatriates and professionals relocating to Bintulu as more multinational companies invest in the region, strengthening the town’s appeal as an investment destination.
On the proposed Samalaju township, Abang Johari said it would provide planned residential areas and supporting facilities to complement the industrial zone’s continued expansion.
He also revealed that the State is exploring a private sector-led accommodation model for workers in Samalaju, drawing inspiration from the Anjung Kasih concept.
“The concept is similar to Anjung Kasih. The private sector builds the accommodation, providing a place to stay for healthy individuals working in Bintulu rather than for patients and their families.
“The approach will be incorporated into the new township that we are planning in Samalaju,” he said.
Abang Johari said the proposed accommodation model would see the private sector take the lead in developing worker housing while the government focuses on creating an environment that supports economic growth and improves living conditions for employees.
He stressed that as Bintulu continues to attract high-value industries and investments, comprehensive planning is needed to ensure infrastructure, housing, education and public amenities develop in tandem with the town’s economic transformation. — DayakDaily
