SIBU, April 14: The public has been spotted queueing up to buy eggs every morning at one of the supermarkets in Sibu after Chinese New Year.

Pictures of them queueing up at the supermarket have appeared on many social media pages.

A housewife, only willing to be known as Lily, went there as early as 8am today and found the queue disappeared instantly once the supermarket started to open its doors.

It was almost like a flash mob.

“People start to queue here as early as 7am. Due to limited stock, the supermarket opens at 8am, and eggs will be snatched up in minutes.

“So I have to go back empty-handed,” said Lily.

The public has been queueing up here because the supermarket sells Grade A eggs at a very reasonable price of RM14.10 per tray (30 eggs).

Other supermarkets may also offer more or less the same price, but there is no queue because they display the same grade of eggs once the egg supply reaches the premises, unlike this particular supermarket, which only displays the eggs the next day.

The predictable timing for the availability of cheap and fresh eggs has been the reason for the queue.

Other supermarkets are selling the same grade of eggs for an even lower price of RM13.60, and despite no queue, they will be snatched up within minutes upon displaying.

“Once these eggs are being put on the shelves, they will be snatched up in minutes, whether in this supermarket or other supermarkets,” said Lily.

A staff of another supermarket said eggs are in short supply, but they are not totally unavailable.

Local eggs of Grade A, sold at RM14.10, are understandably in great demand compared to a tray of 30 AA eggs which costs about RM18.00 and above, and a tray of 30 Grade D eggs at RM12.60. — DayakDaily
