LIMBANG, Dec 29: All agencies under Limbang Divisional Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) are prepared for the possibility of floods arising from the North East monsoon which is expected to last from November until March.

According to a report from Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) today, Limbang Deputy Resident Sebi Abang said that all the agencies involved are ready for the eventuality of floods in Limbang.

The agencies involved include Limbang Divison’s Fire and Rescue Department, Royal Malaysia Police, Civil Defence Force, Sarawak Social Welfare Department and Ministry of Health.

“The monsoon is expected to bring heavy downpours to certain areas which could possibly cause floods in Sarawak,” Sebi was quoted as saying after chairing a committee meeting concerning flood preparations yesterday.

He said the meeting also discussed logistics capabilities by each agency, manpower involved, preparation of food for flood victims and the preparation for the opening of temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in areas which are affected by floods.

“Agencies like Public Works Department (JKR) and Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) are reminded to place warning signs at project sites which are affected by floods to prevent any untoward incidents affecting the public,” he added.

Sebi said Limbang DDMC might increase the number of PPS if the need arises to ensure that the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the prevention of Covid-19 are followed to prevent the transmission of the coronavirus in PPS.

He also reminded individuals who are staying in flood-prone areas to be alert concerning weather conditions, monitor the rising of river water levels and abide by instructions to evacuate by bringing along important documents with them. — DayakDaily
