KUCHING, April 19: Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian continued the tradition of ushering in major festivals in Sarawak in the city by officially lighting Kuching’s iconic White Cat status which has been dressed up an elegant Malay shawl in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
He lauded Kuching City South Council (MBKS) for doing a great job every year through their efforts to dress up the cat statue in costumes representing the different races in Sarawak in conjunction with the related cultural or religious festival being celebrated.
“In Sarawak, we find every occasion to celebrate together, be it Hari Raya, Gawai, Chinese New Year or Chrismasāwe always celebrate together,” he told reporters after officiating at the lighting up of the White Cat statue at Padungan earlier tonight.
Dr Sim said that the costume worn by the cat statue does not just represents MBKS’ efforts, but also reflects Kuching as the city of unity and Sarawakians coming together to celebrate Hari Raya.
“This is consistent with the people of Sarawak in which we always come together to celebrate no matter the (festive) occasion,” he said.
Dr Sim said he has experienced wonderful hospitality and food served during the fasting month of Ramadan and looked forward to the first day of Hari Raya.
“We are grateful for MBKS continuing this tradition of lighting up the famous cat statue in Kuching and dressing it in the appropriate costumes reflecting the race celebrating the festival,” he said.
Also present were MBKS’ Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, deputy Hilmy Othman, councillors and staff. ā DayakDaily
