KUCHING, Sept 3: The Lien Heng Wushu Association’s 188-foot-long dancing ‘fire dragon’ has achieved recognition in the Malaysian Book of Records (MBR).

The dragon, which was paraded during the Seng Ong Kong deity’s birthday celebration earlier this year in March, has been recognised as the longest fire dragon in Malaysia.

In addition, the association has also been recognised by the MBR for three different categories from the same event:

  • Largest Incense Fire Dragon Head
  • Largest Incense Fire Dragon Parade (6,800 participants)
  • Most Incense Fire Dragon Amulets Distributed In An Event (9,999 amulets)

According to Lian Heng Wushu Association president Master Ronny Chin, the custom of the fire dragon has been in Sarawak since 2017.

“This fire dragon originated in China over a thousand years ago. It started with a woman who had a dream that a fire dragon should be built and paraded in the village to ward off diseases,” he said.

He said this during an appreciation night for the association at a restaurant here last night (Sept 2).

Chin added that next year, the association will attempt to make a longer dragon, as they aim to make subsequent dragons seven feet longer than the previous one every year.
