KUCHING, July 2: A Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) leader has downplayed the number of ministerial posts held by Sarawakians, stressing that the welfare and interest of the people were more important.

Congratulating Baru Bian and Chong Chieng Jen on their appointments as Minister of Works and Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs respectively, DAP Socialist Youth Malaysia deputy chief Wong King Wei said Pakatan Harapan Sarawak had a huge task ahead.

“Although many of our supporters and members of Pakatan Harapan Sarawak may feel Sarawak is not given enough positions in the Federal Cabinet, but I tend to opine that it is hard for such appointments to be valued mathematically.

“DAP chose to convey our suggestions and views on the appointment of cabinet members within the framework of Pakatan Harapan. After all, what we are fighting hard for is not the ministerial posts but the welfare and interest of the people,” Wong, who is also Padungan assemblyman, said in a statement today.

Wong believed that Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had taken everything into consideration when forming his cabinet.

“We vividly know that one of the main issues during the recent GE14, apart from corruption, was the economy issue,” he said, adding that Chong would spearhead the revival of the domestic economy of the country and easing the financial burden of the people.

“I personally have the benefit to hear from YB Chong on his inspirations and commitments in reducing the living costs of the people as his priority task. We, the DAP ADUNs (assemblymen) and MPs, were also instructed by him to assist him in various ways in this,” he claimed. — DayakDaily
