KUCHING, Oct 11: Traffic flow issues cannot be instantly solved with proposals, as solutions require going through the proper traffic management authority and professionals, says Kuching City South Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.

Wee said that bottleneck and traffic flow issues at the Jalan Setia Raja roundabout are closely monitored by all authorities, including MBKS and Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR).

He said that the authority needs to relook into traffic in the area and how best to overcome it without causing other traffic bottlenecks in the vicinity.

“With that, MBKS would like to appeal to the people’s representative that it is not for them to monitor and supervise JKR and council jobs as the authorities know what the issue is at Jalan Setia Raja and they are looking into it,” he said, without naming which elected representative he was referring to.

He made these comments during a press conference on the 2nd Cheongsam Cultural Festival themed “Love of Cheongsam, Beauty of the East” at MBKS headquarters here today.

Wee said an overall study needs to be carried out by the authorities, and MBKS will compile complaints and monitored the situation for quite a while.

“There is still ongoing upgrading of roads and traffic lights at Jalan Setia Raja to Kota Samarahan and we cannot just chuck a proposal (at the problem) to ease that specific area and it get jammed again; it will confuse the public.”

Wee attributed traffic patterns that cause such bottlenecks to “human behaviour”.

“With that, we better leave it to the professionals. Wherever the place is under MBKS or JKR, we sit and discuss and get the consultant to see how best to solve,” he said, adding MBKS knows what it is doing and will do the best for people in its jurisdiction. — DayakDaily
