KUCHING, Aug 20: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kuching branch has urged the next federal government to give Sarawakians a chance to helm the Finance Minister’s post.

Its branch chairwoman Datuk Lily Yong said it is high time that a Sarawakian is given an important post in the federal Cabinet so that the State can prove its value in leadership and the country’s development.

“I would like to appeal to the next federal government to not resort to pushing the unimportant posts to Sarawak.

“It has to be some position that can do something, not just window dressing. For an example, do consider us for the Finance Minister post,” she told reporters in a virtual press conference via Zoom today.

Asked who she would nominate for the post, Yong said she would leave such a deliberation to the State government in nominating the most suitable person for the job.

“I believe Sarawak will be capable to think of a suitable person to take charge of the Finance Minister’s post since the State has contributed tremendously in the country’s economic growth,” she added.

Yong also said that despite the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) having only 18 seats in the Parliament, the coalition remains solid in number and has not deviated to ‘left or right’ (in the political power struggle in Malaya).

“This is also because our leaders have no choice because they (candidates for the premiership) are all not very good apples.

“However, for the sake of the people especially amid the Covid-19 pandemic, we have to coordinate and support whoever comes in but give us an important position that we can play a role and let us see how Sarawak can make a change,” she emphasised. — DayakDaily
