KUCHING, May 19: Proper marriage registration in accordance with the law is necessary to avoid citizenship and “anak Sarawak” status problems involving children.
Sarawak Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said the ministry was calling on all elected representatives to help raise public awareness on the importance of marriages being properly registered under legal provisions.
“We call on all elected representatives to help raise awareness among the public on the importance of marriages being properly registered according to legal provisions, so that our children will no longer face citizenship issues and problems related to their status as anak Sarawak in future,” she said.
She said this in her ministerial winding-up speech during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS)sitting today.
The minister was responding to an issue raised by Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong regarding the recognition of children of Sarawakian fathers as Sarawakians through the inclusion of the “K” indicator on their identity cards.
According to Fatimah, the matter would be answered in writing as the same question had also been formally submitted for a written reply. — DayakDaily
