KUCHING, Sept 13: The Advocates Association of Sarawak (AAS) is questioning the absence of police when Kanowit District Office was surrounded by a crowd of protesters in an incident which was captured on video yesterday (Sept 12).
In a statement today, AAS president Gurvir Singh Sandhu said the association was perturbed by the disturbing incident which occurred within the premises of the Kanowit District Office yesterday at around 1.30pm, during the Circuit Court’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court.
As confirmed in a press release issued by the police on Sept 13, he said a riot had ensued after certain individuals were charged in Court over an incident.
“What is shocking is the actions taken by certain individuals to break into the surrounding area of the District Office and start attacking other individuals in the premise.
“We have been informed that as a result of the attacks, two individuals are being treated for serious injuries in Sibu Hospital. The Advocates Association of Sarawak strongly condemns such actions by these individuals,” said Gurvir Singh.
He pointed out that the police hold the responsibility to explain why there were insufficient police personnel at the compound despite the crowd having surrounded the said premise much earlier in the morning when the Court proceedings was ongoing.
“What is even more disturbing, is that the police personnel had left the scene despite seeing huge crowds still surrounding the District Office building, leaving the Court staff, accused person and advocate defenseless.
“It is the responsibility of the police to ensure order and safety during such proceedings. The physical sanctity of the Court has been eroded by such actions, and AAS calls upon the police to take urgent action to bring such culprits to answer for what had transpired.
“Let there be no doubt that members of AAS shall continue to conduct their duty without fear or favour despite the intimidation tactics employed by certain individuals.”
AAS called for the police to take action promptly and to investigate the individuals responsible for this uncalled incident to be held accountable. — DayakDaily
