KUCHING, July 15: Latvian Ambassador to Malaysia Normans Penke expressed amazement at Sarawak’s cultural heritage and vowed to come back in the near future.

“I am honoured to be here and to be invited for this occasion and to participate in the ‘renyai’-cutting ceremony.

“The theme of the celebration ‘United we stand and divided we fall’ is very important to the community here as well as in the rest of the world,” Penke told DayakDaily at the Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Gawai Closing ceremony at Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) headquarters here yesterday.

Although he is the Latvian ambassador to Malaysia, he operates from Riga, Latvia’s capital.

“That’s how we operate at the moment but we need to have more visits here so that we can get to know each other,” he said adding that bilateral trade currently is minimal.

Penke said he got to know about the Gawai closing ceremony from Latvia’s consul office based in Kuala Lumpur.

He said a delegation from his country will visit the state sometime this week. — DayakDaily
