Laid off Indonesian worker sets compatriot’s car ablaze

SARIKEI, Feb 20: It was an act of pure arson when a mentally ill Indonesian man set fire to a car he was travelling in today.

The incident occurred at about 9.20am near No.2 Nyelong Bridge along the Sarikei-Sibu Road.

According to Sarikei district police chief Supt. Awang Arfian Awang Bujang, the man suddenly took out a match and set fire to the MPV which was being driven by another Indonesian.


The driver of the MPV was sending the suspect home as he was just laid off allegedly due to his mental health. The suspect from Sambas, Indonesia was working at an oil palm plantation in Sibu.

“The suspect has been detained and will be referred to the hospital for further investigation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sarikei Fire and Rescue Department Chief Mahmudin Narudin said 11 firefighters rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call from a member of the public.

“Firefighters took only 25 minutes to extinguish the fire that had totally destroyed the car,” Mahmudin said. —DayakDaily
