KUCHING, Nov 5: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is inviting families, children and senior citizens to take part in its three-kilometre Mayor’s Walk at MBKS Boulevard this Sunday (Nov 8), starting at 6.30am.

The walk is open to the public, including those who did not register when the event was initially scheduled in August. Those who had registered and collected their event T-shirts are encouraged to wear them, while newcomers can participate in their own comfortable sports attire.

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the walk was designed as an intergenerational activity, giving grandparents, parents and children an opportunity to spend time together, stay active and strengthen community bonds.

“We had originally planned to hold the walk in August. However, due to the haze, we decided to postpone it out of concern for the health and comfort of our participants,” he said during the press conference today.

Wee said that the event was not about speed or competition, but about allowing people of all ages to enjoy exercise and companionship at their own pace.

He noted that busy daily routines often left families with limited opportunities to spend meaningful time together, making simple activities such as a morning walk a valuable way to reconnect.

“Children bring their energy and excitement, while our older participants bring their stories and experience. Walking together gives different generations an opportunity to connect and create happy memories,” he said.

He added that the initiative reflected MBKS’ efforts to make Kuching South a child-friendly and age-friendly city, where children and older people feel included in community activities.

Participants will also stand a chance to win more than 100 lucky draw prizes, including a mountain bikes, electrical appliances and CHAGEE vouchers, while balloons will be available for children.

Wee thanked the event sponsors, namely Ibraco Berhad, CHAGEE, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Pepsi, Premier Echo Sound & Light System Sdn Bhd and Go Beyond, for their support.

He also acknowledged City Jogger’s Club and its volunteers for assisting as route marshals, as well as the MBKS organising team under Cr Hemang Yu Abit for coordinating the event.

Wee encouraged families, friends and neighbours to take part and start their Sunday with a healthy morning activity.

The Mayor’s Walk will kick off with a warm-up session and Zumba at 6.30am before the three-kilometre walk is flagged off at 7am at MBKS Boulevard, with members of the public welcome to participate. –DayakDaily
