KUCHING, July 6: The Sessions Court here sentenced a labourer to six years’ imprisonment and four strokes of the cane to a charge of robbing a woman in front of Wisma Sego and causing the victim to fall into a drain in the process.

Aszerul Arsad, 28, pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 392 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 397 of the same Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of 14 years and whipping, upon conviction.

Sessions Court Judge Mohd Taufik Mohd @ Mohd Yusoff convicted him as charged and sentenced him to six years’ imprisonment, with effect from June 26 and with four strokes of the cane.

The accused was found to have stolen a smartphone and a handbag with cash monies of RM100 belonging to a 35-year-old victim, in front of Wisma Sego, between 4.30am to 6.15am on June 21.

According to the brief facts of the case, the husband of the victim received a call from an unknown man informing him that his wife was involved in an accident in front of the said building.

When he arrived at the scene, he saw the victim lying near the drain after she was robbed from behind when she was riding on a motorcycle towards her workplace.

The victim was then rushed to the Sarawak General Hospital to receive further treatment, where doctors confirmed that she received injuries to her fingers and pelvis.

The victim was able to identify the man that robbed her from his cloth and helmet that he was wearing while he committed the crime.

When arrested, the accused admitted that he robbed the victim while she was riding on her motorcycle and he threw the victim’s smartphone into the river when his photo went viral on social media.
