KUCHING, July 15: A laborer was sentenced to five years in jail and two strokes of the cane for sexually assaulting his 9-year-old niece.
The 43-year-old accused pleaded guilty to the charge.
The accused was found to have sexually assaulted his 9-year-old niece by touching her breast, at a house in Jalan Puncak Borneo, at about 12.30pm on July 6.
He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 which carries a jail term not exceeding twenty years and liable to whipping.
Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi prayed for a deterrent sentence to be passed as this was a sexual offence involving a 9-year-old victim.
DPP Nadratun said despite the fact that the victim had tried to run away to avoid the accused, the accused still went after her to touch her breast again. — DayakDaily
