Kugiran Masdo, Ethnic Transmissions to headline shows in What About Kuching Festival 2022

KUCHING, Sept 27: Two exciting music shows will be taking place in conjunction with What About Kuching (WAK) in October.

According to the organiser LiveinKCH in a press release, the ‘LiveinKCHxWAK’ music showcase will be held on Oct 8 at the Kuching Civic Centre Hall and will feature indie-pop favourite Kugiran Masdo, which will be making a welcome return to Kuching as a headline act following a two-year absence.

Also featured are Malaysian metalcore band Massacre Conspiracy and Singaporean stoner metal band, Marijannah making their Sarawakian debut.


Sharing the stage with the headliners are Singaporean moshers Tariot and KL punk rockers Trophy Knives, as well as hometown deathcore favourites, Exhale My Ozone.

Leading the charge for the homegrown line-up is hardcore punk quartet, Serangga. Completing the line-up for the event are NOGAS, Afterfall, Clockwise, Heroine, and newcomers Viceroyz.

Berentak! will be happening on Oct 15.

The second show is ‘Berentak!’ which will be happening on Oct 15 also at the Civic Centre Hall. Jointly organised by LiveinKCH and MacMakes Company, Berentak! is a first-of-its-kind music festival specifically showcasing bands from the independent Dayak music scene.

Headlining the show will be Ethnic Transmissions, a ground-breaking five-piece alternative rock band from Kuching.

Their first single, ‘Engka’ paved the way for more progressive bands and singer/songwriters to emerge in the Dayak music scene.

Jointly headlining is Allesandro, vocalist from the band TVA. After embarking on a solo career, Allesandro is currently one of the hottest rising stars in the music scene after the release of his hit single ‘Petang’, which has gained 7.6 million views on YouTube.

Making their debut will be Class 89, a three-piece Bidayuh punk rock band from Padawan, considered to be a hidden gem in the Bidayuh independent music scene.

Other bands announced in the line-up are semi-finalists of the Anugerah Carta Sapa Juara (ACSJ 2016), Hallvard Band from Serian; D’Crystal, a five-piece freestyle rock band from Sibu whose latest single, ‘Sapa Indu Nya’ reached the number 1 spot on Cats FM’s Lagu Tebilang Cats; Sullivan, a heavy metal/post-hardcore band from Kuching with hit songs like ‘Kediri’ and ‘Simpan Meh’; and alternative rock band Hevance from Bintulu famous for their singles ‘Aku Nemu’, ‘Bajik’ and ‘Bedau Alah’.

WAK 2022 is a month-long community-driven festival entering its 4th edition in 2022 after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak as its official main sponsor, WAK 2022 will showcase 185 unique events by 59 collaborators at 26 venues spread across the city.
