KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is aiming to attract at least 1,500 senior citizens to participate in this year’s Kuching Zumba Fiesta 2026 as part of its bid to set a new Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) achievement.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng hopes the signature event, in conjunction with Kuching Festival 2026, will make history as the country’s largest Zumba participation by senior citizens, marking a first-of-its-kind record in Malaysia.
He said the record attempt reflects MBKS’ commitment to promoting active ageing, especially as Kuching is projected to become an ageing city by 2028.
“We believe active ageing is the key to better health, greater happiness and a stronger community. If any city can achieve this record, Kuching can,” he said during a press conference held after the launch of Kuching Zumba Fiesta 2026 at the MBKS conference room today.
Wee called on senior citizens aged 60 and above to take part in the event and play a role in helping Kuching create another milestone.
“The continued enthusiasm of senior citizens in staying active serves as an inspiration for younger generations to adopt healthier lifestyles,” he emphasised.
The Mayor noted that the Kuching Zumba Fiesta, which was introduced more than a decade ago, has grown into one of the highlights of the annual Kuching Festival, drawing thousands of participants each year.
Last year, Kuching secured two MBOR recognitions after setting records for the largest participation in a Zumba event and the largest participation in a Glow-in-the-Dark Zumba event.
The 2026 fiesta remains open to participants of all ages, with residents encouraged to join alongside family members, friends and colleagues.
Participants who register via the iPeople App will stand a chance to win prizes in the lucky draw, including an iPhone 17, electrical appliances and other attractive gifts.
A special award will also be given to the oldest senior citizen participating in the event.
Also present at the launch were Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, Kuching Fiesta Zumba organising chairman Cr Judy Kho, MBKS councillors and Zumba instructors. — DayakDaily
