KUCHING, July 28: Five locations in Sarawak have been identified as potential crocodile sanctuary zones in an effort to address human-crocodile conflict while promoting eco-tourism and research opportunities.

According to a TVS news report, Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the initiative aims to explore the potential of these areas and ease public concerns regarding crocodile threats.

“We want to relocate existing crocodile-free zones to areas with potential, including the Kuching Wetlands National Park. These sanctuaries can also be promoted as tourism sites and serve as centres for research and education on crocodile habitats and behaviour,” he said.

He made the remarks during a press conference following a mangrove replanting programme jointly organised by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and Mubadala Energy at Kuching Wetlands National Park in Petra Jaya here today.

Apart from Kuching Wetlands National Park, the other identified areas include Pulau Seduku, the Rajang area, Sibuti, and either Lawas or Limbang.

Earlier, Len Talif officiated a symbolic planting of 10 mangrove trees at the park to mark the strategic collaboration between SFC and Mubadala Energy. — DayakDaily
