KUCHING, Feb 4: Hawkers along Kuching Waterfront will be permanently relocated to Kuching Esplanade near Brook Dockyard.

Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) mayor Hilmy Othman said some of the hawkers will also be relocated to another area that is still being looked into.

“The relocation is to make way for the pavement upgrading work that will be implemented at Kuching Waterfront which is long due,” he told reporters when met after officiating at the lighting up ceremony for neon lanterns along Green Road today.

Hilmy gave assurance that the relocation area will be provided with proper lighting and facilities to ensure a suitable business environment.

“It is only fair that we have to upgrade that area to boost the business for those who are going to be relocated,” he added.

Asked when work would start on the relocation area, he said that the design has been completed and approved.

“The tender process will eventually be held in one or two months from now and I think the project will be awarded in May this year, and it is expected to be completed within six months,” he said.

On the same note, Hilmi disclosed another project will also be carried out on the whole of Kuching Waterfront to rejuvenate the area.

He said that the project will create a new landscape as well as transform Kuching Waterfront. — DayakDaily
