KUCHING, April 2: The first phase of the construction of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) is scheduled to take place in the third quarter of 2022, starting with the Samarahan Line.

With that, Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Association (Sheda) president Augustine Wong expressed hopes that land-related issues can be expeditiously resolved by relevant agencies.

He said this is so that developers can continue with existing development plans, knowing that their lands are not disrupted.

“Beyond transportation routes, Sheda is also ready to collaborate with Sarawak Metro in assessing the success of the KUTS project through performance indicators, so far as it relates to the real estate industry,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd project director Zafrin Zakariah said the KUTS project which is to be implemented by Sarawak Metro, is part of the Sarawak government’s larger plan to elevate the the State’s economy while creating more job opportunities and promoting greater economic integration.

He said the KUTS project also aims to increase productivity by reducing travel time to the Greater Kuching area whereby extensive connection networks can enable social inclusivity by narrowing urban-rural development gaps.

“In addition to enhancing connectivity, the use of hydrogen buses will directly contribute towards reducing congestion and emissions, and decarbonising the public transportation system, by becoming an important part of the hydrogen economy,” he said in a joint statement by Sheda and Sarawak Metro today.

While Wong applauded Sarawak Metro’s commitment to achieving inter-division connectivity between Kuching, Samarahan and Serian, Zafrin thanked Sheda members for being receptive about working closely on the KUTS project by offering lands near their developments for stations.— Dayakdaily
