Kuching prepares for 2024 Wesak Day Parade on May 11, road closures announced

KUCHING, May 9: Several roads will be closed to accommodate the 2024 Wesak Day Parade scheduled for this coming Saturday (May 11), starting from the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) grounds.

In a statement issued by Kuching District Police Chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah today, the event, expected to commence at 6 pm and conclude by 11 pm, will feature 52 contingents and approximately 5,000 participants.


Starting at MBKS, the routes are as follows: Jalan Padungan, Bulatan Sri Aman (Padungan roundabout), Jalan Ban Hock, Jalan Ban Hock/Jalan Song Thian Cheok traffic light intersection, Ban Hock Road roundabout, Jalan Tabuan, Jalan Tabuan/Jalan McDougall traffic light intersection, Lebuh Wayang, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Chan Chin Ann, Jalan Padungan and Jalan Padungan traffic light intersection, before returning to MBKS.

“As a result, in conjunction with the parade, several roads will be closed in stages beginning this Saturday (May 11) at 5pm to ensure that traffic flows smoothly throughout the parade,” Ahsmon added.

The following roads will be closed in stages and diverted: the Jalan Padungan traffic light intersection/Jalan Datuk Abang Abdul Rahim, Jalan Gambier/Jalan Main Bazaar, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg/Jalan Wawasan, Jalan Tabuan/Jalan McDougall traffic light intersection, Jalan Song Thian Cheok/Jalan Ban Hock, Jalan Padungan/Bulatan Sri Aman (Padungan roundabout) and the Jalan Abell traffic light intersection.

The public is urged to refrain from parking vehicles along the road shoulder and to plan their journeys in advance, considering alternative routes to mitigate congestion.
