KUCHING, Aug 13: Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Sarawak Deputy Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan states that Kuching has the potential to become a ‘City of Festival’ after being designated as a Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy.
According to a TVS report, Snowdan expressed this desire after the successful organisation of various music events and festivals in the city this year.
“What makes this year even more special is that it marks the 60th anniversary of Sarawak Merdeka.
“So, after being named a ‘City of Gastronomy’ by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) in 2021 and a ‘City of Unity’ in 2015, I believe Kuching can also be named a ‘City of Festival’, he said, as quoted.
He made this statement during the Gala Night Performance of the 6th Kuching International Dance Festival, organised by the Dance and Art Teachers Association, Kuching, on Saturday (Aug 12) at the Borneo Cultures Museum here.
In addition, Snowdan stated that the RM250 million Sarawak Performing Arts Centre in the old Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building will be completed by 2026 at the latest.
“I hope that in the future, various performing arts events can be organised there that are on par with Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur,” he added.
Sarawak isn’t just a land of stunning landscapes and diverse cultures; it’s also a thriving hub for festivals and concerts that captivate the senses and spark the flames of creativity.
With a calendar brimming with events celebrating art, music, and culture, Sarawak is a destination where the spirit of festivity and artistic exploration knows no bounds. — DayakDaily
